Box Hill sits on the Cumberland Plain over the Wianamatta Group, and the upper unit through this part of Sydney is Bringelly Shale. Weathering produces clay rich soils with a pronounced contrast between a lighter surface layer and a dense clay subsoil, classed as Kurosols and Sodosols. Those clays are documented as reactive with an appreciable shrink and swell range, and Bringelly Shale in particular carries mixed layer clay minerals that make it more prone to swelling than the Ashfield Shale beneath it. Drainage across the plain is poor, which compounds the movement.
